Dreaming of singing solo in a cabaret nightclub?

Want to step out of the chorus and into the spotlight?

That Singing Feeling

The original class, started in 1995, is designed for students who have some performance experience but need a nudge to get out there and perform solo, or for the professional who has been out of the business a while and is looking to get back in! Six 3-hour classes. Small class size with lots of individual attention. Students work on a 10-minute set, which is then presented in two showcases at a Manhattan cabaret club. Individual and group acting and improv exercises; work on ones style; lyric interpretation; patter-writing; microphone technique; basic staging; expert musical direction.Cost $475.

Putting it Together

For the advanced student who feels ready to put his or her own show together, this workshop puts more focus on individually-tailored material and arrangements, creating a theme and throughline, and more sophisticated patter. Participants work on a 20-minute set. Six weekly 2-hour sessions. Limited to three students. Two showcases at a well-known club. Must have permission of instructor. Next class TBA. Cost $600.

All About CDs!

This occasional 4-hour seminar is for the singer or music business professional who wants to learn more about independently producing a CD. All topics are covered from A to Z, including setting up a business; finding musicians, studios and producers; how to find graphic artists and manufacturers; how to license songs; where to sell your product; how to network, book gigs, market yourself; how to get radio airplay and internet coverage; when to get an attorney. Save yourself loads of $$$ by learning from my trial and error experience before you start it yourself! Music industry panel. Next seminar TBA.

Sing with the Band!

For those who fantasize about singing with a trio in a club! Next class TBA .

My Aim...

In my mind, "cabaret" means having a space to create whatever you want for an intimate stage, be it comedy, monologues, music (rock, folk, blues, or pop? or the more traditional styles associated with cabaret, jazz and theater songs. It is my intention to make solo performers comfortable on stage by helping them to find their style, develop a rapport with the audience through both music and speech, and provide them with a glimpse of what putting an entire show together might involve. The participants are encouraged to creatively interpret material through improvisation, confidence building, and musical coaching. Microphone technique and staging are also covered, as well as aspects of the cabaret business.

I believe that everyone has unique talents to offer and that communication is the key to a successful performance. My classes are known for their atmosphere of encouragement rather than competition. After all, if it's not fun, why do it at all?

In addition to becoming a better performer, I think the participants will feel more empowered having gone through the experience of "going solo". After years of auditioning for and participating in ensemble shows, I have found this to be the case for myself, and I am eager to share my enthusiasm with others.
